Information about visa and residence

For concrete information and advise about visa and residence you can visit the Belgian Embassy or Consulate in your country. (http://www.diplomatie.be/en/addresses/abroad/default.asp). They will help you with the proper formalities for entering Belgium.

Students coming from EEA Member States (EU + Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) don't need to apply for a visa. Other students should apply for a "Student Visa" (officially called an "Authorisation for Provisional Stay"). More information about the visa procedures can be found on http://www.diplomatie.be/en/travel/visaLang.asp.

Foreign students have to register in their city of residence. This has to be done at the city hall within eight days of arrival in Belgium. The local authorities will issue an identity document for a foreign student temporarily living in Belgium. This document will allow you to enter and leave the country. It will also show the exact duration of stay.

Social support and grants

Foreign nationals can get study finance (grants) from the Flemish authorities when they meet one of the following conditions:

  1. You are residing in Belgium and your parents are EU-nationals working of having worked in Belgium (as an employee);
  2. You have been granted a permanent residence permit for Belgium;
  3. You are (child of) a candidate-refugee and your request for asylum has been declared admissible;

Furthermore, eligibility will be based on the social and financial conditions of the foreign national.

Cost of living and tuition fees

Tuition fees for bachelor and master's programmes are set by the government. These fees are intended for EU nationals and are at the moment around €520.

Other programmes have a different tuition fee system. Students from non-EU countries should contact the higher education institution about the tuition fee for a certain programme.
